Bodega Worker Fatally Stabbed In East New York City

A bodega worker in East New York was fatally stabbed on a Friday afternoon in what police described as a confrontation that began over loose cigarettes and escalated into deadly violence.

According to authorities, 33-year-old Diego Sandoval-Nava was working at a deli on Hegeman Avenue when the incident occurred around 3 p.m. A man entered the store displaying erratic behavior and shouting. After leaving briefly, the suspect returned and tried to reach behind the counter where the cigarettes were kept. When Sandoval-Nava intervened, the man stabbed him multiple times in the abdomen and then fled the scene.

Sandoval-Nava was taken to One Brooklyn Health–Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. He lived above the deli and was known in the neighborhood as a dedicated father and a kind presence. Friends and community members remembered him as someone who regularly checked on others and offered help when he could.

Fernando Mateo of United Bodegas of America expressed the shock many felt at the senselessness of the killing. Taking a life over something as minor as cigarettes, he said, left the community struggling to understand the violence.

Police described the suspect as approximately 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds with braided hair. As of the latest updates, no arrest had been made and the investigation remained active.

Bodegas serve as essential neighborhood institutions across New York City, often open long hours and staffed by people who know their regular customers by name. Attacks on workers in these small stores strike at both individual families and the broader sense of safety in the communities they serve. When a dispute over a few cigarettes ends in a fatal stabbing, it underscores how quickly ordinary workplace moments can turn dangerous.

The loss of Diego Sandoval-Nava leaves behind a family and a neighborhood that relied on him. Police continue to seek information that could lead to an arrest. Anyone with details about the incident is urged to contact authorities.
