A longtime subway conductor was slashed in the neck while leaning out of his cabin window early Thursday morning at a Brooklyn station, according to the NYPD.

The attack occurred just after 3:30 a.m. at the Rockaway Avenue station on the A line in Brownsville. The 59-year-old conductor, Alton Scott, had his head extended from the cabin window when he was cut across the neck. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where doctors closed the large wound with 34 stitches.

Scott has worked for the MTA for 24 years. The suspect was described as an adult man wearing a blue vest who fled the station after the attack. No arrest had been made at the time of the initial reports.

The incident added to a troubling pattern of violence against transit workers. At that point in the year, seven MTA employees had already been attacked. In four of those cases, the suspects had lengthy criminal histories, including individuals with 50 or more prior arrests.

Conductors and other transit workers operate in environments where they are frequently exposed to the public with limited physical protection. When a worker is attacked while simply performing routine duties — in this case, looking out from the cabin — it underscores the vulnerability built into the job. Early-morning hours can be particularly risky because stations are quieter and fewer people are present to intervene or serve as witnesses.

Attacks on MTA workers have prompted ongoing discussions about better barriers, increased policing in stations, and how the system handles individuals with extensive arrest records who repeatedly come into contact with transit staff. For Scott, a veteran employee with nearly a quarter-century of service, the slash to the neck turned an ordinary overnight shift into a serious medical emergency.
